International Design Out Crime Conferences

Welcome to the International Design Out Crime Conference series. These conferences will focus on crime prevention through design. Typical conference themes will include all issues at the interface of crime prevention and design including: CPTED. Design Out Crime, Designing Against Crime, second-generation CPTED, designs for situational crime prevention, designs for socially-based crime prevention, design to reduce offender motivation, bystander apathy, etc. The conferences have a peer reviewed paper track (double blind refereed by at least two external reviewers), a 'Tales from the Field' track (not peer reviewed). This 'Tales from the Field' stream is intended to provide an opportunity for experienced practitioners to present significant lessons learned. In addition, conferences may also include poster and workshop tracks. All written presentations will be published online as open access.

  • iDOC2019 New Directions in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

    February 14, 2019 – February 14, 2019

    The iDOC 2019 International Design Out Crime and CPTED Event on 14th Fenruary 2019 focuses on New Directions in CPTED and Night Time Economy CPTED.

    There are many new changes to CPTED and Design Out Crime. These are driven by a large number of factors changing n the world at large:

    • increased use of evidence on what works and what doesn't, where, when and why;
    • the extention of CPTED into new areas such as anti-terrorism, crowded places and event management;
    • New technologies transforming CPTED (e.g. face recognition, virtual following, 360deg 24/7 surveillance, biometric access control, drones...)
    • New thinking about CPTED in relation to health, gender, equity, control, economic development, legal liabilities...
    • Professionalisation of CPTED practices
    • New forms of CPTED training and certification
    • CPTED standards.

  • International Design Out Crime Conference 2009

    December 2, 2009 – December 4, 2009

    The 2009 International Design Out Crime conference (iDOC'09) was jointly arranged by Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and University Technology Sydney and held at Edith Cowan University in sunny Perth, Western Australia 2-4 December 2009..

    The conference focused on research into Design Out Crime and the 'Tales from the Field' of security professionals in designing to reduce crime. Participants included representatives from crime prevention, security, government, research, police, architecture and planning,  product design and community groups.
